Shakespeare In The Park - Merchant of Venice

One of the best things to do in Buffalo if you are a theatre lover is to check out Shakespeare In The Park (Delaware Park right by Hoyt Lake, behind the Delaware Park Rose Garden).

Shakespeare In The Park has been running in Buffalo since 1976! It typically attracts 40,000 people a summer and is one of the biggest and most successful Shakespeare festivals in the country. It is free (they do come around at intermission for donations) and you bring a chair and food/drink for yourself. In case of bad weather, they may cancel shows, and all that information is posted on their website/Facebook pages.

This summer the two shows they are running are Merchant of Venice and As You Like It. A group of us went to see Merchant of Venice on Tuesday July 5th! It was an absolutely gorgeous night and there was a good crowd!

Merchant of Venice happens to be one of my favorite Shakespeare plays and I was really looking forward to it. I thought the actors did an excellent job portraying the characters and I really enjoyed the show as a whole. The actress who played Portia, Susan Drodz did an amazing job and of course Saul Elkin was great as Shylock. Other standouts for me were Bassanio and Gratiano. The costumes were great and the simplicity of the stage was great.

As You Like It will open on July 21st and run through August 14th. Performances run Tuesday - Sunday evenings and begin at 7:30pm.

Make sure you grab some bug spray for at night, a light jacket (it gets cool in Buffalo when the sun goes down, haha) bring a bottle of wine, some snacks and your favorite people and enjoy a fun night with Shakespeare In The Park!!!
